Task 8 - 3rd Analysis

Task 7 - 2nd Analysis

Unremarkable- https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2017/05/24/unremarkable/

'Unremarkable starts as a mystery—a woman, clearly in distress, exits her car and promptly collapses in a parking lot. She is dead. What is the cause? Was she involved in criminal conspiracy of some sort? Is she patient zero for some new pandemic? The answer, slowly revealed, is much more mundane'

Unremarkable has the genre of a crime drama. This is what our film genre is going to be. When watching this short film, the sense of unknowing is what i like. She's collapses but why ? Why is she having an autopsy?

The main character is the women and she is dead for most of the film. We see her alive near the end though as we are reliving her last moments, maybe discovering the cause of her death.

At the very start, we hear diegetic sounds like the car door opening and her moaning. This gives a sense of suspense as we dont know why she looks and sounds so worried.
During the autopsy , a high pitched non-diegetic beat comes on. Its quite a quick beat which creates a sense of mystery. The music moves the story along as the scenes changes from room to room by pulling back the white sheet.

The dialogue in this is very clear. For the most part is very simple, for example the doctor talking to her about skiing. Even though she is dead.

The narrative to this piece is non-linear as it uses rewinds and it isn't in a chronological order. We see her death, autopsy and then how she dies.

Due to the nudity and the violence, id say the target audience is 16+. I say this because

Task 6 - 1st Analysis

Over -https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2016/04/16/over/

'Join Threlfall's unusual film 'Over' uses reverse chronological storytelling to reveal the incidents that caused a crime scene in a quiet neighbourhood. A leisurely-paced short with an overwhelming powerful and surprising resolution'

Created in 2015, 'Over' is a winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Palm Springs.

The genre of this film is listed as an experimental film.
These are the conventions of an experimental film;
They are set out to be nonconformist
To challenge the orthodox ideas
Various Styles
Minimum Language

In this short film, there is very minimal speech. There is however a lot of dietetic natural sounds like the wind blowing and the birds chirping. There isn't any non-diegetic music or anything which gives it the tense feeling. It also brings suspense.

The editing was very simple. It would jump cut back in time to the same scene. I like this as the simplicity is very powerful and effective. In this film, there aren't any main characters.

Task 5 - Initial thought on style/genre

With the crime genre, my initial thought is that it will be challenging yet exciting. As editor of the group, I'm expecting to make the film fast paced. I thought this after a great amount of research. The fast jump cuts will create a sense of tension. I also think that our plot of a murder is exciting in some ways.

Task 4 - Technological Advances

In the last 10 years, technology has advanced massively. This has had a great effect on allowing people to be able to make short films in the comfort of their own home. Technology is also a lot cheaper due to the vast variety of it around the world. 10 years ago, filming cameras that had a high quality were basically non-existent if you didn’t have a lot of money. Nowadays there has been a feature filmed on a iPhone! Editing software is also available for home uses on laptop, computer and even phones. Some editing software is even free!

Task 3 - Institutional Information and Legal Restraints

Legal Restraints-

Title- Having a title that is the same as another could potentially be very bad. If your title is the same as one that is quite prestigious, it would make it harder for people to find your film as the other film would show up more often.

Copyright- If you use music in your short film, it needs to be non copyrighted. If not you could be sued for money by the original owners.

Task 2 - History/Background of Short Films

  1.  In the 1910’s, short films started being made in the United States of America. They were most likely comedy as this is what made people laugh through the and post war. However, the 1930’s saw the popularity of the short film decrease. Charlie Chaplin saw the short films in 1955 rise again. Since then, Disney and other big names such as Pixar have tried making short films such as ‘For the Birds’ but the short films genre haven’t been that popular. Nowadays, its left to independent companies to produce and distribute them as it is unknown to how popular they might become.
There are many conventions of a short film. In one, they tend to stick to 2 or 3 main characters. This is because the film wouldn’t have time to give everyone a backstory. It would also give the audience time to relate to the characters. Typically, in a short film, the producers and distributers have a low budget. So, big name actors and very rare in short films. Some films even have just actor in them to keep costs low. Locations are also kept at a minimum. Obviously, a short film is short, normally a max length of 35 minutes, Any film longer than that would be classed as a ‘Feature Film’. Most short films are 5- 10 minutes. From short films, I have looked at in the past to ones I am looking at now, they sometimes have a plot twist. This is to keep the storyline interesting.

Task 1 - Introduction to Brief

Film Brief -

Film Brief:A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately 5 minutes, together with two of the following three options:

• a radio advertisement for the film;

• a poster for the film

• a review page from a magazine featuring the film

  1. Jess, Katie and I have chosen the short film brief. We all chose to do this because we felt it required a lot of skills but the outcome could be very successful and satisfying. Us as a group have all the required skills to do this. Other than achieving a successful film, I would like to gain even more skills then what I gained last year. This is because I would like to go into a career of editing.
